Marcus Garvey

Who’s Marcus Garvey??? Let’s begin by stating he’s one of the most historically important Black figures for Africans across the world. He represented ideals which sought to see Africans thrive economically, socially and politically thus forming Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Not only this but Garvey went on to form The Black Star Line.

The Black Star Line was a shipping company meant to facilitate the transportation of freed slaves back to Africa their homeland. The port of entry identified at the time was Ghana.

Marcus Garvey together with his principles guided and inspired our Black Star Line capsule collection from the Summer 18 range. His influence has stretched far and wide with musicians such as Bob Marley quoting Garvey, “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our mind” to Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) and Talib Kweli naming their hip hop group Black Star (Rawkus 1998).

Check out this biography of Marcus Garvey below and look out for our full range drop on 14 December 2018.
