In 1963 on this day 25 May representatives of 30 African nations met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, hosted by Emperor Haile Selassie. The Organisation of African Unity (now known as the African Union) was founded at the meeting , initial aim being to encourage decolonisation of Angola, Mozambique, South Africa and Southern Rhodesia.
Africa Day (formerly African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day) commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity. It aims to celebrate African unity and each year there is a different theme, the theme for 2019 being a Healthy Lifestyle Day. It aims to encourage Africans and all nations to lead a healthy life for the well-being of all of us. Dr. Yankuba Kassama stated that adopting a healthy lifestyle involves regular physical activity or exercise, healthy eating habits, reducing stress, avoiding tobacco use and alcohol abuse and also added that there is a need to have policies in place to adopt a healthy lifestyle in the African Union Commission.
The role of the African Union involves promoting democracy in African countries, promoting human rights and sustaining African economies by preventing intra-African conflicts.
‘United we stand,divided we fall’.
